The Neighborhood Watch program is the most effective means available for keeping crime out of our neighborhoods. It relies on the best crime fighting tool ever invented... a good neighbor. When neighbors work together with law enforcement, a great crime fighting team is created.
Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of citizens to reduce crime in their neighborhoods. It involves:
There can't be a Police Officer on every corner, so citizen involvement is essential to combat crime. You and your neighbors are the ones who really know what is going on in your neighborhood and by cooperating with each other and the police, people can help fight crime.
The city of Fortuna currently has twenty-five Block captains. A Block Captain is the person who gets a Neighborhood Watch program started in their neighborhood. Block Captains do this by contacting all of their neighbors and setting up neighborhood meetings where all of the neighbors can get together and discuss ways to better their community.
Block Captains are urged to attend a monthly meeting, which is held at the Fortuna Police Dept. In this meeting block captains from all over the city have a chance to talk about what's going on in their neighborhoods and discuss ways to combat potential problems.
If you would like more information concerning Neighborhood Watch, please contact Officer Andy Martin at (707) 725-7550.
