Fortuna Police Department's dare13.gif (6584 bytes) Program

The Fortuna Police Department dare13.gif (6584 bytes) Unit consists of one Fortuna Police Officer. It is taught at the fifth grade level in both the Rohnerville School and the Fortuna Elementary School Districts. It will reach over two hundred students during the school year.

dare13.gif (6584 bytes) primarily focuses on the fifth grade with a ten-week curriculum. This curriculum covers everything from "Eight Ways to Say No to Drugs" to techniques for improving self esteem. The program is designed to not only teach kids how to "Say No to Drugs," but to also give them the self-confidence and the tools they need to do so.

Researchers have identified certain protective and social bounding factors in the family, school, and community which may foster resiliency in young people, in other words, the capacity of young people for healthy, independent growth in spite of adverse conditions. These strategies focus on the development of social competence, communications skills, self esteem, empathy, alternative activities to drug abuse and other destructive behaviors.
